What is Reward Multiplier?

Reward Multiplier, as the name suggests, is a way to accelerate (or multiply) the rewards earn rate. When you shop through Reward Multiplier, you earn bonus MR points as per the multiplier for that card on top of base MR points. Higher the card in the hierarchy, higher the multiplier would be for that card.

Offer fulfillment is usually done within 120 days from offer end date which is not ideal but one good thing is that you get to choose the brand whose e-voucher you want. I always go for either Amazon or Flipkart but there are plenty of options that you can choose from like –

  • Marketplace: Flipkart, Tata Cliq, Myntra, Amazon, Nykaa
  • Fashion: Armani Exchange, Biba, Gas, Hamleys, Michael Kors, Mothercare, Only, Skechers, Satya Paul, Steve Madden, Superdry, United Colors of Benetton, Vero Moda, W for Women, Hush Puppies

How to make the most of Reward Multiplier?

Usually for small purchases on merchant sites, I find it cumbersome to use Reward Multiplier as it involves additional steps and fulfillment takes a lot of time too. But if you have an Amex card for which 3X or 5X multiplier is applicable then for any big purchases, it would be really beneficial to use Reward Multiplier.

Also, if there is any Amex card offer on merchant site then you can essentially triple dip by using Reward Multiplier as you would get base MR points + bonus MR points + Amex card offer.

If you hold MRCC or Gold charge card you can buy e-vouchers of Amazon or Flipkart or any other brand you want to reach the spend target of Rs. 6000 for monthly bonus. This way you get base MR points + bonus MR points + 1000 Monthly bonus points which helps to reach 18000 or 24000 points faster for Gold collection redemption.

Let’s look at the impact on reward rate with and w/o reward multiplier for all Amex cards. Note that the calculation is done only on the base reward rate and I have not considered accelerated reward rate categories or milestones applicable to individual cards to keep things simple.

Looking at the numbers above it is obvious that if you hold premium Amex cards, you can boost reward rate significantly and with Amex Platinum & Gold charge cards the reward rate just multiplies by 5!!!

Tip: Purchase Amazon e-vouchers using Amex card to pay Insurance premium or Utility bills or use them for any other spends using Amazon pay option on 3rd party sites/apps

Bottomline

Amex Reward Multiplier is surely a great way to boost the reward rate on your Amex card and if you hold a premium card like Amex Gold or Amex Platinum Travel or a super premium card like Amex Platinum charge card which get 3X or 5X multiplier then the reward rate shoots up really fast.
